You will find here suggestions for your stay (such as: restaurants, things to do and sports) in and around Lisbon, as well as some practical information. This has all been curated by the Lisbon Office team as a gift to you.

Portuguese Caravel – “a thirst for discovery”
The Portuguese caravel, a ship type prominent during the Age of Discovery, had a distinctive shape and design optimised for long voyages and exploration.
The combination of square and lateen (triangular) sails, known as the “caravela redonda,” made the caravel versatile for different wind conditions. The square sails provided speed and power when sailing downwind. The lateen sails on the aft mast, inspired on the Muslim dhows, enabled the caravel to tack (sail into the wind) more effectively.
The Portuguese were innovative in shipbuilding techniques, often incorporating feedback from their extensive voyages, including continual improvements to the caravel design based on their exploratory needs.
