Originally home to the Order of Saint Jerome, this architectural jewel ordered by King Manuel I was declared a National Monument over a century ago and has since been recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance. The monastery’s church, welcoming those who seek solace and the curious alike, together with its cloister that has transitioned to a secular space, attracts a myriad of visitors annually, establishing it as Portugal’s most cherished cultural treasure.

Not far from the monastery, the Belém Tower, also built in the Manueline-style rises majestically, a watch guard by the sea. This emblematic structure is more than just a monument; it’s a symbol of Portugal’s deep-seated bond with the ocean—a bond that propelled the nation to new worlds and unprecedented maritime glory.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Lisbon emerged as the epicenter of global trade, thanks to the intrepid voyages of Portuguese explorers. These navigators charted unknown waters and connected continents, turning Lisbon into a bustling, cosmopolitan hub of commerce and culture.

Today, the historic area of Belém where once the caravels set sail, remains one of Lisbon’s most prestigious locations. It’s a place where the maritime and always scenic and laid-back atmosphere breathes through its timeless monuments, lush parks and breathtaking contemporary architecture.
